The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday suspended Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat for one year for exceeding the 57kg weight limit and getting disqualified at the World championships in Zagreb, Croatia, last month.
His coaching staff were issued a warning.
The WFI had show-caused the ace wrestler on September 23 for jumping the weight limit by 1.7kg.
On examining Aman’s reply, sent on September 29, and getting clarifications from the support staff, the WFI disciplinary committee found his response “unsatisfactory.” He was suspended from wrestling related activities at national and international levels from September 23.

The WFI, in its letter, said Aman, who reported for the preparatory camp in Porec 18 days prior to his scheduled bout on September 14, had sufficient time to maintain his weight and fitness.
As an Olympic medallist, the federation expected the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and commitment from him. “Failure to adhere to these standards, particularly in managing your weight, has not only impacted your personal credibility but also tarnished the image of the nation on the global stage, causing disappointment among the wrestling fraternity and supporters,” said the letter.
It “deprived” India of a potential medal and caused “significant financial loss due to the expenditure incurred by the Government of India for your participation and training.”
If Aman serves the suspension fully, it may hamper his preparations for the 2026 Asian Games, where wrestling will be held from September 30 to October 3.
Aman’s was the third such incident, after Vinesh Phogat and Neha Sangwan episodes in Paris 2024 and 2025 World under-20 championships respectively, involving an Indian wrestler in about a year.
