Delhi Capitals (DC) moved to the top of the Women’s Premier League points table with a comfortable six-wicket win over Gujarat Giants (GG) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Tuesday.
DC (six points) recorded a third win in five outings, while GG (two points) stayed in bottom position.
After a disciplined bowling show restricted GG to 127 for nine, DC rode on good knocks from Shafali Verma (44, 27b, 5×4, 3×6) and Jess Jonassen (61 n.o., 32b, 9×4, 2×6) to romp home in 15.1 overs.
Shafali and Jonassen came together in the fourth over, after captain Meg Lanning lost her stumps to Kashvee Gautam.
With a healthy dose of strokeplay, Shafali and Jonassen kept DC well ahead of the curve. When Shafali departed to off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner, DC was left with 40 runs to get off 62 balls.
Jonassen kept the foot on the gas to complete the job.
Fighting knock
Earlier, a fine fighting unbeaten 40 from Bharti Fulmali took GG to a respectable score. Gujarat was in danger of folding for a sub-100 total, when a collapse reduced the side to 60 for six. Fulmali, who came in at No.8, and Tanuja Kanwar (16, 24b, 1×4) came to GG’s rescue with a 51-run stand.
Fulmali started slowly, before taking the aggressive route against spinners Minnu Mani and Jonassen.
Tanuja fell in the 18th over, sacrificing her wicket to a run-out to keep Fulmali alive. Fulmali, however, did not receive much strike in the death overs, as the tailenders struggled to put bat on ball.
West Indian Deandra Dottin (26, 24b, 5×4) looked in good form, but a sharp indipper from Annabel Sutherland struck the fatal blow.
Experienced South African Marizanne Kapp did well with the new ball, taking out Harleen Deol and Phoebe Litchfield by building the pressure.
Fellow pacer Shikha Pandey kept up the good work done by Kapp, prising out Beth Mooney and Kashvee Gautam off successive deliveries.
The scores: Gujarat Giants 127/9 in 20 overs (Deandra Dottin 26, Bharti Fulmali 40 n.o., Shikha Pandey 2/18, Marizanne Kapp 2/17, Annabel Sutherland 2/20) lost to Delhi Capitals 131/4 in 15.1 overs (Shafali Verma 44, Jess Jonassen 61 n.o., Kashvee Gautam 2/26).
Toss: Delhi Capitals.
PoM: Jonassen.
