Paris Olympian Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) booked berths in the semifinals to ensure medals for India at the World boxing championships in Liverpool on Wednesday.

Jaismine outshone Uzbekistan’s Khumorabonu Mamajonova 5-0 in the quarterfinals. Nupur, who got a first-round bye in a field of 10 boxers, defeated another Uzbek Oltinoy Sotimboeva 4-1 in the last-eight stage. However, two-time World champion Nikhat Zareen (51kg) lost 0-5 to Turkiye’s double Olympics silver medallist and a former World champion Buse Naz in the last eight.

Jaismine will take on Venezuelan Olympian Omailyn Alcala, while Nupur will meet Turkiye’s Seyma Duztas next. Jaismine beat Asian under-22 champion Khumorabonu with her counter-punching skills, aided by her great footwork and use of long arms. Excellent use of jabs and combinations kept the Indian ahead in all three rounds.

Nupur, a World Cup stage-II gold medallist, used her jabs to win the first round 4-1 despite clinching from both boxers. The Uzbek bounced back against the Indian, who fell twice due to messy tussles, before both were penalised a point apiece in the third round. But Nupur won the contest amid chaotic action.

Nikhat showed aggression, but Buse Naz, despite a point deduction for holding in the second round, gave a masterclass of counter-punching as she moved back to land right hooks and won a unanimous decision.

On Tuesday, Minakshi (48kg), Jadumani Singh (50kg) and Abhinash Jamwal (65kg) won their respective bouts with an identical 5-0 verdict to reach the quarters. Jugnoo (85kg) lost to Scotland’s Robert William McNulty 0-5.
