IPL | Abhishek and Head anything but reckless, says coach Vettori

At a time when batters are fearless and reckless frequently in the T20 era, Daniel Vettori, the Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach, stressed that neither Abhishek Sharma nor Travis Head do so despite the general impression.

“When we have been successful in the Powerplay, Abhi and Travis have just been able to play their shots and deal with any ball on merit. Because there is a reputation of aggressive play and all-out attack, when the dismissals do come, people surmise that it could be slightly reckless, but that’s not the way I view it,” Vettori said here on Wednesday, ahead of Sunrisers’ Indian Premier League clash against Mumbai Indians.

“Bowlers are allowed to bowl well, and you can’t succeed all the time. But I know how much thought Abby and Travis put into their batting and how much they assess conditions, how much they assess bowlers.

“And they know that when the ball’s there, they obviously want to hit it. But at no stage do I feel like they are being reckless or anything like that. They are just very good players who have a lot of shots.”

Despite a timid start to the campaign, Abhishek and Head added 171 — the highest partnership of the season — against Punjab Kings as SRH accomplished the highest successful chase of the season.
