Gurindervir Singh broke the men’s National 100m record with a blistering run in the Indian Grand Prix 1 at SAI (NSSC) here on Friday.

Reliance sprinter Gurindervir clocked a time of 10.20s, erasing the mark of Manikanta Hoblidhar (10.23s) set in 2023. In the neighbouring lane, Hoblidhar clocked 10.22s.

“I’ve had my mind set on breaking the National record for a while. But after joining the Reliance set up six months ago, my confidence has gone sky high,” a delighted Gurindervir said.

“Earlier, when I was training in Jalandhar, the budget allotted for my diet was ₹160 per day. Now at Reliance, it is ₹2,000 per day. There has also been a huge difference in my training, availability of gym equipment, physio, dietician and psychologist. Now that I have all the support, good performances are bound to come,” Gurindervir said.

Next goal

With his showing, the 24-year-old made the cut for the Asian championships to be held in May. “My next goal is to win a medal at the Asian championships,” Gurindervir said.

It was a memorable day for Telangana sprinter Nithya Gandhe, who clinched a sprint double in the women’s section and also made the cut for the Asian championships.

Nithya was happy to record a personal best in the 100m. “It has been a long time since an Indian woman has qualified in sprint events. Of late, the craze for 100m in India has reduced. Everyone is focused on the 400m, long jump and javelin. So I am trying to bring sprints back into the limelight,” Nithya said.

Five more athletes booked berths for the Asian championships — Krishan Kumar (men’s 800m), Sarvesh Anil (men’s high jump), Shashank Patil (men’s javelin), Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 100m hurdles) and Abhinaya Shetty (women’s high jump).
