Harbhajan Singh, the former India off-spinner, is set to attend the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the first time, while former India captain and former BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly will return to the AGM after three years.
The duo’s name was confirmed in the draft electoral list for the BCCI election, which will be held during the AGM on September 28. Harbhajan, the 103-Test veteran and a Rajya Sabha MP, has been nominated by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). Ganguly, set to return as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president next week, will be the CAB representative at the AGM.
Harbhajan’s candidature may indicate a possible larger role in the BCCI administration for him. Roger Binny, who has stood down as the BCCI chief after turning 70 in July, was the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) representative when he was elected unopposed as the BCCI president in 2022.
It will be interesting to see if the BCCI continues its recent tradition of having a renowned cricketer at the helm. While Ganguly was the president from 2019 till 2022, 1983 World Cup champion Binny succeeded him.
